A mixed methods study focusing on how students nurses learn mental health nursing skills and how the ward environment contributed to their learning. The study involved both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection including a Delphi study, questionnaire survey and case studies. This thesis evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a transdiagnostic cognitive therapy called Method of Levels (MOL) for people experiencing first episode psychosis (FEP). It comprises three studies: (i) a qualitative metasynthesis exploring sources of distress in FEP; (ii) a feasibility randomised controlled trial (RCT) of MOL for FEP; and (iii) a qualitative study exploring experiences of receiving MOL amongst people with FEP. I investigated the understanding of psychological interventions in practice at an Australian mental health service and whether I could train clinicians to introduce cognitive behavioural therapy to practice. This thesis present a review of literature on home treatment in mental health crisis and the results of a programme of research comprising an RCT, a quasi-experimental study and a qualitative evaluation conducted in North London to evaluate the recently established crisis resolution teams. This narrative inquiry explored a community arts programme to promote mental health. Thirty five qualitative interviews were conducted amongst stakeholders including the organisers and the service users. A collective narrative is presented where people found personal, occupational and social fulfilment. Identity claims are strong, as people have re-constructed themselves as artists. Participants enjoy a sense of belonging and social identity with like-minded people. Themes:Mental health; community arts
Action research on metaphor and pictorial metaphor (PM) in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT). A four part mixed methods Delphi was designed and administered. Metaphor is a recognised clinical tool yet limited systematic study's were available into the development and effects of working with metaphor and PM in CAT. Findings were supportive and provided insight into the effect and workings of the technique.
